Library presents August activities

The Captiva Memorial Library, at 11560 Chapin Lane, is offering the following free programs for adults and youth for the month of August:

ADULT PROGRAMS

– July 31 to Aug. 10: Intergalactic Multi-Task Challenge

Participate and earn chances to win a branch prize. Complete tasks on the Multi-Task Challenge list to earn tickets. The more tasks completed, the more chances to win. To participate, stop in to pick up a “multi-pass,” get your first stamp/ticket and be entered to win.

– Coloring for Grown-ups

(daily during operating hours)

Researchers and art therapists alike have touted the calming effects of coloring, and adults have found this childhood activity a refreshing way to release their creativity, relieve stress and meet other participants. Coloring pages designed especially for adults, as well as colored pencils, provided.

– Checkers

(daily during operating hours)

Play classic checkers, “the game of games,” or try other versions such as Fox and Geese, Give Away, Shifting Pyramids, Corner Checkers or Goban. Instructions included. Alternatively, reverse the field and play Tic Tac Toe or Super Tic Tac Toe.

TEEN PROGRAMS

– July 31, to Aug. 3: Early Bird or Night Owl?

Are you a morning person or do you prefer the nights? Share why you enjoy the rising sun or moon through this simple activity.

– Aug. 6-10: Starry Night Hanging Dcor

(daily during operating hours)

A simple project using paper and ribbon that is sure to shine bright in your favorite room. All supplies provided while they last.

– Aug. 20-31: Sea Turtles

(daily during operating hours)

Sea turtles are still nesting and hatching on Captiva. Learn about these super cool reptiles. There is a book display on sea turtles with fun activity sheets to complete. Make a sea turtle craft to take home.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

– July 31, to Aug. 3: Sun and Moon Agamograph

(daily during operating hours)

A fun coloring and folding project that changes depending on the viewing angle. All supplies provided while they last.

– Aug. 6-10: Starry Night Hanging Dcor

EARLY LITERACY PROGRAMS

– July 31, to Aug. 3: Animal Activity

(daily during operating hours)

Infant to 24 months old, “Some Fly, Some Swim”; ages 2-3, “Zoo Day”; and ages 4-5, “Jungle Animals”

Take part in the annual Summer Reading Program online using ReaderZone, an app that will let you see your progress in real time. Visit readerzone.com or download the app to create a free account, then enter the reading code “lcls2019summer” to join. Adults registering multiple family members under the same email account must first create a “parent” account before adding themselves and their children.

ReaderZone participants are automatically entered to win the grand prize in their age category after logging one book between May 28 and Aug. 10. Prizes include an early literacy basket for birth-preschool age children, a dinner cruise aboard the Little Toot tugboat for school-aged kids, a variety of tickets to area attractions of interest for teens, and a Kindle Paperwhite for adult readers.

Winners must be able to pick up their prizes at any Lee County library or Bookmobile stop.

The Captiva Memorial Library is open Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about a program or to register, call the library at 239-533-4890.
