Tennis tournament to benefit SCCF

Time is running out to sign up for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s tourney.
The 27th Annual SCCF Tennis Tournament will take place on April 27-28 at the Beachview Tennis Club on Sanibel. Free and open to spectators, it will feature men’s and women’s doubles in the categories of 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, with the winners and runner-ups getting a Luc Century etched glass.
Event chair Lisa Newmeyer-Cochrane explained that Century founded the fundraiser.
“He started it because tennis is just a fun sport for everybody,” she said. “He thought it would be a good way to get people together to raise money for SCCF, and have fun and get some exercise.”
The entry fee is $75 per player and includes a T-shirt, plus breakfast and lunch both days.
Newmeyer-Cochrane noted that players can sign up with a team member, or they can register as an individual and will be matched up with a partner for the competition, so anyone can take part.
The deadline to sign up is April 24.
However, late registrations will be taken if there are openings.
The etched glasses to be awarded are one-of-a-kind.
“They’re special one-time pieces. No other tournament really does etched glass,” she said. “The winners will receive their Luc Century etched glasses on Sunday afternoon or sooner.”
Spectators are invited to come out.
“We’re going to do a raffle,” Newmeyer-Cochrane said. “There’ll be some great prizes.”
Proceeds from the event will support the SCCF and its work.
“Which is dedicated to the conservation of coastal habitats and aquatic resources on Sanibel and Captiva and the surrounding areas through education, land acquisition and stewardships,” she said.
“We’re hoping to raise $25,000,” Newmeyer-Cochrane added.
Grampy’s Charities is serving as a presenting sponsor. Breakfast and lunch are being donated by Bailey’s General Store, the Lazy Flamingo, Malia Island Fusion Cuisine, Traders and the Sanibel Deli.
Players are encouraged to register soon.
“It’s a great island event that brings locals and guests together for a fun weekend, and it’s giving back to nature the best way we know how,” she said. “SCCF, they are a first-class organization that does so much for this island and the barrier islands around us.”
