On April 1, the city reported the passing for former Planning Director James C. Jordan.

Jordan joined Sanibel in 1985, acquiring over 33 years of professional planning experience before he retired in 2018. At the time of his retirement, Jordan was the longest tenured employee at the city.

He began his career with the city as a planning technician and was later appointed to the position of planner. Jordan earned his associate’s degree from Edison Community College and his bachelor’s from the University of Florida, majoring in public administration with a minor in urban planning.

His accomplishments with the city included working on the following projects:

– Serving as planning director from 2009 until his retirement

– Preparation of the Evaluation and Appraisal Report based amendments of the Sanibel Plan

– Preparation of Land Development Code Amendments for Emergency Electric Power Generator

– Development and preparation of the city Build-back Regulations

– Facilitating the Local Business Roundtable Discussion Group

– Preparation of Citizen’s Guide to Coastal and Flood Plain Management

– Inventorying and updating the city’s telecommunications tolerant areas

A legacy of the early pioneer families, he had considered Sanibel his home from the age of 3.

Jordan leaves behind his wife, Marguerite; his daughters, Alicia and Angelica; and his grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on April 26 at 5 p.m. at Saint Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church, at 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
