Sinking of battleships, Sanibel PoetryFest set for Sanibel library

The Sanibel Public Library recently announced its upcoming programs for adults and youth.

Duane E. Shaffer will review the 1941 Sinking of Bismarck & HMS Prince of Wales on April 5 at 10 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. Japanese aircraft devastated allied naval forces, sinking the battleship HMS Prince of Wales in the Pacific. Shaffer will also cover the Battle of Denmark Straits.

Poets and poetry lovers are invited to the annual Sanibel PoetryFest on April 8 at 3:30 p.m.

The library also hosts the following weekly programs for children:

– Family Storytime: Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and Thursdays at 11 a.m. For young readers and their caregivers, the program helps develop pre-reading skills through songs and stories.

– After-School Clique: Wednesdays at 3 p.m. Geared for children in fourth through sixth grade, the group will craft, build, make and play, with books and a provided snack thrown in.

– After-School Crew: Thursdays at 3 p.m. Children in kindergarten through third grade will enjoy favorite books, never-knew-existed books, games and crafts, with a snack provided.

– Reading to Bessie: Rain-free Thursdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Have fun reading to Bessie, a bearded collie and Reading Education Assistance Dog. Participants can sign up on the spot.

In addition, a Saturday Family Storytime will be held on April 13 at 11 a.m.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays.
