Father-daughter duo Bill Bevevino and Jill Tonachio, both of Pennsylvania, found a scotch bonnet on Feb. 15 on Cayo Costa during a Captiva Cruises’ shelling outing. Tonachio explained that they have been coming to Sanibel for seven years, but her father has been visiting for the last 23 years. An avid “fanatic” sheller, as described by her, Bevevino had never seen a scotch bonnet. She said they had to ask their cruise captain what kind of shell it was. Part of the “helmet” classification, it is in perfect condition. Tonachio noted that her father sets his alarm to follow the low tide and can be found shelling at any and all hours of the day. He has often taken his 11 grandchildren along on his adventures at 2 or 3 a.m. to hunt for sea treasures. The youth, as well as his three adult children, treasure the memories of late night/early morning shelling on Sanibel’s shores.
