F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva, with Hope HealthCare Community Liaison Darlene Grossman, will offer a community lunch and learn presentation, “A Discussion about Hospice Care and Palliative Care,” on April 10 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at The Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.

During the workshop, participants will become acquainted with the differences in care and services of hospice versus palliative care. Payment options such as Medicaid, Medicare or private insurance will be discussed. There will be additional information on how to obtain or connect with services and an opportunity for questions and answers.

“People are living longer now and quality of life is important,” Grossman said. “Hospice provides medical, emotional and spiritual care and support focusing on comfort and quality of life. Palliative care supports a person from the time of their diagnosis through the entire course of their illness. It provides renewed strength and symptom relief.”

The intent of the discussion is to provide enough information for people to make informed, educated decisions, when necessary.

“Many times, conversations about chronic or terminal illness and end of life decisions are difficult because the best option may not be known,” F.I.S.H. Program Director Kathy Y. Monroe said. “This seminar will be the chance for individuals to find out how palliative care can be a route to being comfortable while dealing with something that is very uncomfortable. The specifics and other pertinent facts about hospice care and services, will be discussed.”

The seminar is open to the community and lunch will be provided.
