Bidding opens on Sanibel Captiva Art League bags at Bailey’s
The Sanibel Captiva Art League recently kicked off one of its annual fundraisers with the help of Bailey’s General Store on Sanibel, which donates its store bags, storefront and lots of support.
On display at the store are over 30 hand-painted grocery bags that people can bid on in a silent auction format to benefit F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva. The bags will be available for bidding until March 29.
For more than 20 years, the SCAL has been painting the bags to raise money for island charities. Originally, it painted the brown paper bags before transitioning several years ago to the canvas ones.
“They’re more permanent,” Jeannine Desmarais, a SCAL member, said. “Some people who buy them frame the artwork.”
She noted that a wide range of subjects are painted on the bags. Artists have used oil paint, watercolor, acrylics and other mediums. It is a wonderful exhibition of different styles and different subjects.
“It’s really surprising what the artists select to paint and how well they execute their ideas on a cloth bag,” Desmarais said.
