Civil Rights in the Sunshine State
The Sanibel Community Association and Circle of Community Leadership will present the “Civil Rights in the Sunshine State” exhibit now to Feb. 11. Developed by the Florida Museum of History in 2014 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, in collaboration with universities, organizations and individuals, it explores the history of the Civil Rights movement in Florida through pictures, graphs and narratives to educate visitors about the state’s contributions to the movement. Many of the photos are from the State Archives of Florida. There are also videos of civil rights leaders, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Patricia Stephens Due, Theodore Gibson and the Rev. C. K. Steele.
Audubon Lecture Series
The Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society will present the next lecture in its series, “Hummingbirds of the Northern Andes,” on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. From many trips to the region, Peter Hawrylyshyn will detail his experiences observing and photographing many of the more than 150 hummingbird species that inhabit the high peaks. A $10 donation is appreciated, with proceeds after costs used to promote conservation on Sanibel and in Florida. Kids Cooking
Kids Cooking is held on the first Monday of each month, except March, from October through May from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Resident Chief Jarred Harris will teach fundamental nutritional cooking skills and help students develop basic kitchen awareness and food preparation. The culturally-based menus will stress healthy and nutritious whole foods. Students will make the items, then sit down for a meal together. Cost is $50 per class or $175 for four classes; some scholarships will be available due to sponsorships by the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and private citizens. Prepaid registration with required paperwork is encouraged. The following class menus are planned:
– Feb. 4: Homemade sushi rolls, chicken teriyaki and vegetable tempura
– March 1: Caribbean bean soup, curried chicken and roti, pineapple-glazed fish, coconut and vegetable stew, and banana fritters and honey
– April 1: Vegetable quesadillas, chicken tamales, fish tacos, homemade salsa and guacamole, and fried ice cream and churros
– May 6: Surprise menu

Dr. Anthony Dixon, professor and university archivist at Bethune-Cookman College, will deliver the program. He will be joined by Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ Rev. Dr. John Danner, who will talk about his experiences in the Civil Rights Movement. Donations suggested.
Colorful Sips
Sissi Janku will host a beginners-to-advanced acrylic painting class on Feb. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. Bring your own snacks and beverages. Cost is $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

Resident Chef Jarred Harris will teach a hands-on cooking class on Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. The menu will feature: spiced eggplant caviar and crispy flat bread, chargrilled vegetable pithivier (French puff pastry cake), and chocolate Truffles and chocolate-covered strawberries. Cost is $50 for members and $60 for guests. Advance registration required.

Resident Chef Jarred Harris will host a cooking demonstration on Feb. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. The menu will feature: pear and watercress salad with candied walnuts and sherry vinaigrette, grilled cauliflower and mushroom steaks with spinach leeks and roasted peppers, and coconut and lime creme brulee. Fashion Show and Luncheon
Featuring fashions from 15 stores at Periwinkle Place Shops, a Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held on Feb. 22 at 11:30 a.m. Resident Chef Jarred Harris will prepare lunch. Cost is $45 for members and $50 for guests. Deadline to purchase tickets is Feb. 19.

The Sanibel Community Association will host its A Night to Remember “1927 Gala” on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. The event will feature an evening of fine dining, rich with history and unique island flavor. Sponsorship opportunities available.
Loretta and Emil Bourbon Dinner
Chef Loretta Paganini and husband Emil will present a Raw and Finished Bourbon Dinner on Jan. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. Explore the value of finishing by compare sampling: Angel’s Envy Bourbon (finished in port wine barrels); Jefferson Reserve Bourbon (raw) and finished in rum barrels; Belle Meade Bourbon (raw) and sherry finished; Whistle Pig Old world rye (a blend finished in sauternes, Madeira and port barrels). Dinner will enhance the experience of the “new age” approach to a classic American beverage. Cost is $125 per person.
SCA Historical Documentary
The Community House will showcase a documentary about the facility on Jan. 27 from 1 to 2 p.m. There will be lots of historical footage shown. Donations will be taken at the door; popcorn available for sale.

Gulfshore Opera
The Gulfshore Opera will perform “GO Cabaret” on Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. An informal evening of popular songs with jazz piano trio accompaniment, enjoy nostalgic hits from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s with the Professional Artist in Residence and jazz trio accompaniment. The concert was conceived as a casual social mixer in the true cabaret style, with long enough breaks in between sets for the audience to enjoy the wine and cheese spread available at each of the locations. Community Interests Series
The next program in the Community Interests Series, “The plight of solitary bee species, the ecosystem services that they provide, and what you can do to give them a fighting chance,” will be held on Jan. 21 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Presenter Marisol Mata will talk about new scientific research, novel approaches for inspiring community stewardship toward pollinators, and a look at some of the lesser known bees in our own backyard. A $5 donation is suggested.
LUNAFEST
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva will host LUNAFEST on Jan. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. It is a women’s film festival and fundraiser dedicated to bringing women together, raising awareness about women’s issues and highlighting female filmmakers. A traveling festival, LUNAFEST features female talent in all aspects of filmmaking and across society. The short films range from animation to fictional drama and cover topics such as parenting, immigration, racism and sexism, as well as personal stories. Tickets are $20 each. Ecuadorian Dinner
An Ecuadorian-infused dinner will be held on Jan. 10 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., followed by the Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society meeting and program at 7:30 p.m. The dinner will feature: potato and cheese soup, onion and tomato salad, stewed chicken with rice and plantains and pineapple flan with rum and brown sugar sauce; cash bar available. The program will spotlight an entertaining and educational talk about the wildlife of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands by Ken Burgener, who will entertain with stories, pictures and video about his recent summer adventure. Dinner is $22 per person.

A Community Shredding Day will be held on Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon in the north lot, across the street from the building. Shred documents, credit card receipts, checks, CD/DVD and more. Remove large paperclips and binder clips; staples and small paper clips can stay. Those bringing more than four boxes or bags for disposal need to call ahead. Cost is $5 per box or bag. Enter via the driveway next to Dunlop Road and exit via the driveway nearest to the Sanibel Bean.

A Dine and Design Workshop will take place on Jan. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. Resident Chef Jarred Harris will prepare lunch, followed by a workshop with the Sanibel design team of Decorating Den Interiors. The topic will be “High Point Review – Explore Home Furnishings Trends.” Bring a photo of your design challenge and the staff will offer solutions. There will also be door prizes and studio sample displays. Cost is $30.
Joyful Living
Jenny Li Ciccone will present Joyful Living on Jan. 15 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The free workshop will introduce attendees to the five-week, EFT tapping series for body and health. The series sessions will take place on Jan. 22, Jan. 29, Feb. 5, Feb. 12 and Feb 19; each session costs $30 for members and $35 for guests.

African Roots of Southern Cooking
Organized in conjunction with the “Civil Rights in the Sunshine State” exhibit, a presentation on African Roots of Southern Cooking will take place on Jan. 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dr. Martha Bireda, executive director of the Blanchard House Museum in Punta Gorda, will host the event in partnership with Resident Chef Jarred Harris. Open to the public; donations suggested.
A Night to Remember
The Sanibel Community Association will host its A Night to Remember “1927 Gala” on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. The event will feature an evening of fine dining, rich with history and unique island flavor. Sponsorship opportunities available.
Loretta and Emil Bourbon Dinner
Chef Loretta Paganini and husband Emil will present a Raw and Finished Bourbon Dinner on Jan. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. Explore the value of finishing by compare sampling: Angel’s Envy Bourbon (finished in port wine barrels); Jefferson Reserve Bourbon (raw) and finished in rum barrels; Belle Meade Bourbon (raw) and sherry finished; Whistle Pig Old world rye (a blend finished in sauternes, Madeira and port barrels). Dinner will enhance the experience of the “new age” approach to a classic American beverage. Cost is $125 per person.
MLK, Civil Rights Movement
Organized in conjunction with the “Civil Rights in the Sunshine State” exhibit, a lecture on Dr. Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement will be held on Feb. 4. Dr. Anthony Dixon, professor and university archivist at Bethune-Cookman College, will deliver the program. He will be joined by Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ Rev. Dr. John Danner, who will talk about his experiences in the Civil Rights Movement. Open to the public; donations suggested.
The Community House is selling honey harvested from its hive, along with other products made by Resident Chef Jarred Harris.
