Shell Club announces monthly speaker

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club will meet on Feb. 3 at 1:45 p.m. at The Community House, at 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. The meeting will begin with an auction of shells to benefit the Mollusks on the Move Program at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum; cash or checks accepted. The featured speaker will be Dr. Eric Milbrant, marine laboratory director at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation. He will give a presentation on “Red Tide Monitoring and Research at the SCCF Marine Laboratory.” Starting in November 2017, the red tide event reached its peak in July and August. Milbrant will explain the algae bloom by a marine dinoflagellate and the ecological consequences to fish and biodiversity. The presentation will also highlight the research and monitoring being conducted by the SCCF. Refreshments will be served and door prizes awarded. The meeting are free and open to the public.
