Sandy Westwick, of Palatine, Illinois, found a lightning whelk on Jan. 10 at Loggerhead Cay Beach on Sanibel. She reported that she was walking the beach when the perfect shell came rolling through the waves near her feet. Westwick usually walks the beach in the late afternoon between biking and tennis, but that day she went for a stroll in the late morning. She and husband spend their winters on Sanibel.
