The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation will host “Evenings at the Homestead: The Water Crisis Updated for 2019” on Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the pavilion at the Bailey Homestead Preserve.

Whether you lived through the water quality crisis that reached a crescendo in the summer or followed the national news coverage remotely, the presentation is an opportunity to hear from those who worked on the front lines. The speakers will address the red ride in the Gulf of Mexico, the toxic, freshwater blue-green algae in the Caloosahatchee, and the devastating effects on marine life and coastal economy.

Learn about what happened from a scientific, policy and business perspective, the formation and recovery of a dead zone offshore in the Gulf, and steps the public can take to prevent and minimize future disturbances to regional water quality. It will also provide new information on the continuing water quality challenges, and ways in which the changes in Florida’s political leadership may effect SCCF’s policy outreach.

There will be presentations and a panel discussion with:

– Rae Ann Wessel, SCCF Natural Resource policy director

– Dr. Eric Milbrandt, SCCF Marine Lab director

– James Evans, director of Natural Resources for the city of Sanibel

BIG ARTS will host a Artists Reception on Jan. 4 for its two new exhibits on display.

It will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Phillips Gallery and Founders Gallery.

“Fresh” – the Sanibel-Captiva Art League’s 43rd Annual Juried All Members show – will be on exhibit in the Phillips Gallery. This year’s theme will feature new hot-off-the-easel artworks.

In the Founders Gallery, “Dj Vu” will feature works by contemporary sculptor and FGCU Associate Professor Mary Sullivan Voytek. Through the use of combined media, including aluminum, brass, bronze, copper and light, she envisions and constructs sculpture that seeks deeper meaning and resonance in our lives by exploring our sense of belonging and relationship to the natural, spiritual and man-made worlds.

Voytek’s work continues to be informed by the juxtaposition of urban and rural materials, techniques and energy. Throughout her career her approach has broadened in artistic range to include environmental and social activism.

Complimentary wine and hor’dourves will be provided.

Both shows are on display through Jan. 27.

For information, visit online at www.BIGARTS.org or call 239-395-0900.

The Phillips and Founders galleries are at 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel.
