Junonia found on Sanibel
Jacob Mouw, 41, of Whitehall, Michigan, found a junonia shell on Jan. 9 at Gulfside City Beach Park on Sanibel, about 100 yards east of the east entrance to the parking lot. The shell was buried about six inches under the sand, which Mouw found while using a small garden rake to uncover shells. Having just finished digging in the area, two Shell Ambassadors were nearby. They explained to Mouw and his wife, Theresa, what they had found. The family reported that they were very excited to learn what they had uncovered. Mouw and his wife have been visiting his mother, Diana, and Allen Alexander annually since they moved to the area four years ago. The family added that Mouw, a “wanna-be archaeologist and now shelling expert,” and his wife search for shells and sea glass frequently along the east side of Lake Michigan from Muskegon to Manistee.
