The Battle of Tarawa 1943

Except to the planners in Washington and Tokyo this small atoll was virtually unknown. Then on Nov. 20, 1943, after 76 hours of intense combat the island was taken. The battle saw heroism by both attackers and defenders. Why Tarawa? It was midway between Truk and Hawaii, and it had an all-important airfield. Duane E. The Raid on Taranto 1940

Duane E. Shaffer will present “The Raid on Taranto 1940” from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Sanibel Public Library, at 770 Dunlop Road, Sanibel. The Battle of Taranto took place on Nov. 11-12, 1940, between British naval forces, under Admiral Andrew Cunningham, and Italian naval forces, under Admiral Inigo Campioni. The Royal Navy launched the first all-aircraft ship-to-ship naval attack in history, employing 21 obsolete Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers. The success of the attack augured the ascendancy of naval aviation over the big guns of battleships.

BIG ARTS Current Events will host its annual seminar on the economy’s outlook from 10 a.m. to noon in the Phillips Gallery, at 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel. The speakers will include: Dick Pyle, president of Sanibel Captiva Trust Company; Dr. Larry Davidson, professor emeritus of business economics and public policy at Indiana University; and Dr. David Blanchflower, labour economist, professor of economics at Dartmouth College and research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
