SCUCC to present annual holiday services
Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ will offer a series of seasonal services.
On Dec. 24 beginning at 5 p.m., the Lighthouse Beach Christmas Eve Service will feature candle lighting, music and the Nativity story related by Senior Pastor the Rev. Dr. John H. Danner. Thanks to amplifiers, the joyful sound will carry up the beach. The informal service of lessons and carols has been a traditional holiday favorite since 1979.
Shuttle transportation to the beach will be available by trolley from the church and the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce, at 1159 Causeway Road. Additional vans will be on hand at the close of the service. There are bike racks at the beach. Attendees are asked to bring a chair or blanket, flashlight and insect repellent.
The offering taken will benefit F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva and The Salvation Army.
On Dec. 24 at 9 p.m., the Christmas Eve Carols and Candlelight Service in the church sanctuary will feature music by another soloist, as well as carols by the congregation and readings of the Christmas story. There will be a 12-foot decorated tree, poinsettias, festive lights and greenery outdoors.
Dec. 30 is Bell Sunday, a church tradition when everyone brings or borrows bells to ring. Like other Sundays, the 9 a.m. service is a blended one. Music is provided by the trio of Shawn Allison, Abbey Allison and Dave Dust. At the traditional worship service at 11 a.m., the choir will sing under the direction of Dr. Elwood Smith and accompanied by organist Norm Libby.
