Fourth-graders from The Sanibel School recently biked to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s Nature Center for a day of investigative learning.

Students were challenged with a scavenger hunt looking for camouflaged items along the trail and micro habitats within the interior wetlands and mid-island ridge ecosystems. After exploring the nature trails, SCCF herpetologist Chris Lechowicz gave a presentation to the students focusing on interesting facts of the snakes of Sanibel.

Students also had time to sit by the Sanibel River and contemplate their natural surroundings. The following are what two students came up with:

“Oh the smell of leaves and soil under my feet.

Oh the joy that brings me to this place that I love.

The sun shining on the quiet river.

The trees reflecting off the water with the blue sky.

The sticks crackling as I step on the wooden bridge over the water.

The amazing green nature around me makes my heart warm up.”

“SCCF is an amazing place if you love learning about Sanibel’s nature and animals. When I experienced this it made me so happy. I learned so much! There is a beautiful nature trail. If you listen closely you can hear the birds chirping their own special song. If you are lucky you might get to see animals like otters, birds and many more. You’re able to see the Sanibel River on the nature trail. It is a beautiful sight you have to see! I hope you get to see and hear everything I did!”
