Current Events to host seminar on outlook for the economy

2 min read

BIG ARTS Current Events will host its annual seminar on the economy’s outlook on Jan. 8.

The program will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the Phillips Gallery.

The panel of speakers will include:

– Dick Pyle, president of Sanibel Captiva Trust Company. Since 2003, he has been a member of the company’s Asset Management Committee. His 47 years of investment research and portfolio management experience has included being co-founder, director, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Winslow Capital Management in Minneapolis from 1992 to 2003. From 1982 to 1992, he served as managing director and research analyst at Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis. The discussion will lead off with a summary of his company’s forecast for economic growth.

– Dr. Larry Davidson, professor emeritus of business economics and public policy at Indiana University. His research interests focus on the measurement and impacts of globalization. Davidson has a blog and regularly comments on economic policy. He has conducted courses in economics at the BIG ARTS Winter Academy for the last seven years. Davidson will comment on the forecasts and the effects of monetary and fiscal policy and trade negotiations on the economy.

– Dr. David Blanchflower, labour economist, professor of economics at Dartmouth College and research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He was an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England from 2006 to 2009. Last year, Blanchflower suggested that a recession might occur within two years – by the end of 2019. He believes that there is considerable underemployment in the United States and things are not going as well as they appear for workers and that expansionary fiscal and monetary policies (including interest rate restraint) are still appropriate. His new book, “Not working: Where have all the good jobs gone?” comes out in June.

The program is open to the public; a $10 contribution is suggested for admission.

It is also recommended that attendees arrive 15 minutes early.

The Phillips Gallery is at 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel.
