The day after Thanksgiving kicks off a holiday tradition for the Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club that has been going on for more than 40 years – its Christmas tree fundraiser.

The former gas station at Bailey’s Shopping Center will turn into a wonderland of Frasier firs freshly cut and shipped on refrigerated trucks from Michigan. About 210 trees will be for purchase, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will remain on sale through Christmas Eve or until they are gone.

All grown in Michigan, the trees are between 5 feet and 10 feet in height.

“We have always had good luck with Michigan trees,” Cliff Nolan, organizer of the sale, said. “They are healthy and full and beautiful. Buyers will be very happy with them.”

The Christmas tree sale has grown to become one of the club’s largest fund-raising events.

“The entire club pitches in, from set up to selling, which ensures 100 percent of the revenue goes directly to the charitable work of the Lions Club,” President Bob Kern said.

Proceeds from the sale go to charities that the club supports.

The gas station is at 2477 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
