Let’s Go
U.S. veterans will be honored and featured at a Community Social set for today, Nov. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Community House on Sanibel, organized by the Sanibel Community Association.
In recognition of Veterans Day, the themed menu will be “all-American.”
Resident Chef Jarred Harris will prepare all of the food, which will feature: iceberg wedges with tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles and chopped bacon; chicken and dumplings; old-fashioned meatloaf; mashed potatoes and gravy; macaroni and cheese; and mixed vegetables.
Adults are $15 per person, and children ages 10 and under are $10 each; tickets will be $18 at the door. For an additional $5, attendees can partake in the ice cream sundae bar and dessert topping sauces.
Veterans eat for free, but advance notice is recommended by calling 239-472-2155.
Billy’s Rentals, Jason Maughan Law Group and Bailey’s General Store are the meal sponsors.
During the event, there will be veteran speakers talking about their service.
In addition, The Community House and King Arthur Flour are holding a pie baking contest. Open to home cooks of any age – no professional chefs – the pies will be judged on best tasting, appearance, creativity and texture. King Arthur cookbooks and gift certificates will be awarded to the top placers.
The judging will take place from 5 to 6 p.m., prior to the start of the Community Social. Those interested in entering the contest need to drop off their pie and recipe at the venue by 5 p.m.
Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

Let’s Go
The Sanibel Island Farmers Market recently returned to the island with some new additions.
Marking its 11th season, the market will take place on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sanibel City Hall from October through May. Organized by Local Roots, which is co-owned by island residents Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura, the weekly market will feature a mix of vendors and products, plus crafters.
Those shopping to stock up on groceries will find organic produce, exotic fruits, cheeses, breads and bagels, fresh eggs, guacamole and salsa, jams, local honey, pickles and more, along with seafood. There will be vendors for handmade soaps and essential oils, plus flowers and plants like bromeliads.
The crafters are a new element, driven in part by the number of visitors to the islands. Some of their products include handmade seagrass hats, handwoven Tunisian towels and hand blocked clothing.
Once again, Local Roots is partnering with F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva to collect unsold boxes of vegetables, fruits and other offerings from the vendors each week to donate to the food pantry. The market will also again serve as a drop-off site for donations of non-perishable items for the pantry.
There is free parking at City Hall, the Sanibel Public Library and BIG ARTS Strauss Theater.
Bike racks are provided.
Only service dogs are permitted.

Open to the public, the event will be held at City Hall, at 800 Dunlop Road.
Fred Bondurant, past chapter president of the Lee Coast Chapter of the MOAA, will officiate.
This year’s guest speaker will be Michael Macray, who will speak about the World War 1 Armistice Agreement, which occurred 100 years ago on Nov. 11, 1918.
