Zonta recognized by Habitat for Humanity for charitable work
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva was recognized at its Oct. 3 meeting by Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties for its sponsorship of and service to the 2018 Women Build project.
Presented by Elisha Baird, community program director for Habitat, the recognition award was accepted by club President Barbara Beran.
“We are so happy and proud to support and be a part of the Women Build program and to be able to empower women through affordable home ownership,” she said.
Women Build involves building and rehabbing houses to provide safe low-cost homes for Lee County residents who qualify. Zonta’s sponsorship for the past three years has helped provide homes for female heads of household and their children.
In addition, Zonta supports Women Build in Lee County through hands-on service. Volunteers provide physical labor at various locations, accomplishing tasks like exterior and interior painting and laying flooring, while working under the guidance of professionals and alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners.
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva was also recognized at its District 11 conference on Sept. 28-30 at the Sanibel Harbor Resort. It received outstanding performance awards for activity and initiative, as well as for service and advocacy. Women Build program has been named the Zonta District 11 project for 2018-2019.
“Our club always strives to do its best to bring the problems women face to the attention of the public and to help women and children in need,” Beran said.
