The Island Seniors’ Trash & Treasures Sale is set for this weekend at the Center 4 Life.

The membership group will host the annual event on Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the proceeds helping to subsidize programs, staffing hours, fitness equipment and more at the center that the funding received from the city of Sanibel does not cover. Approximately $13,000 was raised at last year’s sale.

“It’s a fundraiser for the programs for the Island Seniors,” event co-chair Dorothy Sawyer said.

Co-chair Carole Fallon added that the event is one for the entire community.

“It’s a day out – the more the merrier,” she said, adding that first-time shoppers are often surprised by the quality of the items they find. “The bargains are really good.”

The gently used items run the gamut, from linens, housewares, lamps and home dcor, to children’s toys, chairs, shelving and other furniture, and pet accessories. There are even holiday decorations.

“It’s a treasure trove,” Fallon said, adding that there is something for everyone. “We have endless glassware, and lots of prints and paintings this year. There’s also beach and island dcor.”

“They always go away delighted,” she said of shoppers.

As of Oct. 25, there was a possibility there might be some bicycles available.

One of the big draws at the event is the jewelry section, which Island Senior Bea Pappas oversees.

“Bea has quite an eclectic interesting selection of jewelry,” Fallon said.

With hundreds of pieces up for grabs, they range from necklaces, rings and pins, to regular earrings, clip-on ones and more. There is sterling silver jewelry and pieces from Chico’s, Trifari and Coro.

Island Seniors does not sell – nor accept – clothing, shoes, books and electronics.

A new element at this year’s event is a china cabinet available for sale, with the proceeds to benefit Community Housing & Resources. Fallon explained that it was donated to CHR, but the non-profit had no way to sell it. Island Seniors stepped up and suggested adding it to the annual event at the center.

Cash and local checks will be accepted.

There will also be hot dogs, chips and drinks available for purchase.

“We are accepting donations still,” Sawyer said.

Items can be dropped off up at the center through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The community is encouraged to stop by.

“Come early,” Fallon recommended. “Don’t be disappointed.”

Any items leftover after the event will be picked up by the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Cape Coral for its thrift store. Proceeds from the store go to benefit the Harry Chapin Food Pantry.
