Sanibel Sea School launches new season of adult programs
On Nov. 2, the Sanibel Sea School will launch its first session of adult programs for the 2018-2019 season, called Sanibel Sea School Lifers. The organization’s adult offerings have been restructured this year and will offer something for everyone – boat trips, guest speakers, social events, documentary screenings and more.
“We believe that learning is at its best when it is enjoyable, locally and culturally relevant, and tied to meaningful experiences,” Director of Education Shannon Stainken said.
The programs will be divided into three series – fall, winter and spring. Each will have a theme, and there will be a variety of learning opportunities related to each. First up is fisheries management.
“We live in an area with a rich fishing history, and both commercial and recreational fishermen are affected by the management choices we make, so this topic is very interesting and applicable,” Stainken said.
She explained that while the topic should be taken seriously, the learning will be fun.
“We planned an evening of fish Bingo, screenings of some of our all-time favorite documentaries and a fly tying workshop because we thought these were things our community could really look forward to,” Stainken said. “We hope everyone will come out and join us.”
The Sanibel Sea School Lifers fall schedule is as follows:
– Nov. 2: Boat excursion, “Save our Fish,” with Dr. Bruce Neill from 9 a.m. to noon
– Nov. 9: Film and discussion night, “The End of the Line,” from 7 to 9 p.m.
– Nov. 16: Social event, “Fish Bingo,” from 4 to 6 p.m.
– Nov. 28: Fly fishing films and discussion, “Fly Fishing in the Anthropocene” and select shorts, from 7 to 9 p.m.
– Nov. 30: Guest lecture with Dr. Ross Boucek, of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, from 4 to 6 p.m.
– Dec. 14: Fly tying workshop with local notaries from 7 to 9 p.m.
– Dec. 7: Ocean ornament making at the annual Luminary Festival (free)
Most programs are $20 per person and do not require registration, but there are some exceptions.
