The Sanibel Captiva Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its monthly luncheon on Oct. 23, with the next guest in its Women in Leadership Speaker Series.

Dorrie Hipschman, executive director of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, will present “Life on Earth: The Museums, Our Responsibility, My Journey.” The program will review the meaningful role of natural history museums, including the shell museum, in sustaining life. She will also share insights into her personal journey and her role in the museum community.

“Natural history museums never stop discovering and sharing scientific information,” Hipschman said. “When I started my career, I did not envision taking this path, but now I can’t imagine doing anything more important.”

She will illuminate the vital role in global science, culture and history played by the museum and will touch on one’s responsibility, as residents of both Sanibel and planet earth, in nurturing museums.

“Hipschman’s powerful message goes beyond the tough trade-offs women face in developing careers to fundamental issues of relevance and meaning,” Gloria Garrett, president of the island chapter, said. “Her perspective on balancing personal and professional roles spawn a great discussion with inspiration for all of us, women and men alike.”

The chapter usually meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa, at 1451 Middle Gulf Drive, Sanibel. Networking starts at 11:30 a.m., with lunch and a speaker from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. The meetings are open to the public – men and women alike.

To RSVP, email info@ABWASanibelCaptiva.org or register online at Eventbrite.
