National Tutoring Week is Oct. 1-5 and F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva wants to honor its tutors by bringing awareness to the organization’s Volunteer Tutoring Program.

The program is offered to children and adults in numerous subjects and at various levels. The volunteer tutoring involves a combination of instruction and assisting with assignments on a one-on-one basis.

“I’ve talked with a few parents who say their child needs extra help, but they cannot find or afford a tutor,” Program Director Kathy Y. Monroe said. “At F.I.S.H., we have discovered that tutoring works. One-on-one tutoring, in conjunction with the teacher’s curriculum, makes a measurable difference for students. We have very knowledgeable volunteers who are ready, willing and able to assist.”

“If for some reason F.I.S.H. cannot locate a volunteer for a certain subject matter or level, F.I.S.H. may be able to provide financial assistance for a specifically skilled and trained tutor outside of our volunteer base,” she added.

Students may be in elementary, middle or high school, as well as adults who are continuing their education or seeking assistance with ESOL. When inquiries are made about the program, F.I.S.H. gathers information on subject, student’s level, struggle points and expectations, then matches them with a volunteer tutor. Once matched, the student and tutor make their own arrangements as to time, location, number of days per week and such.

Many tutoring programs ask for an ongoing commitment. However, F.I.S.H.’s program works with the student’s schedule and availability and tutoring can stop and restart as need be. F.I.S.H. monitors the participant’s success through discussion with the student, parent – when applicable – and tutor.

Volunteer tutors are former teachers and business people who get to share what they know, not only about the subject matter, but also about how success in school has made a difference in their lives. The extra attention and assistance the student receives can strengthen the student’s sense of self-worth and self-confidence, as well as boost their GPA.
