Lee County preparing to seek grant funding for algae cleanup

1 min read

Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass, chairman of the Lee Board of County Commissioners, met today with representatives of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to discuss grant opportunities related to blue-green algae cleanup.

Gov. Rick Scott issued an emergency order last week that, among other things, directed the Florida DEP to establish a grant program to provide local governments with funding to contract for cleanup services.

It is anticipated that the state will amend its budget and make dollars available within the next few weeks. Lee County is preparing to seek the grant funding.

Pendergrass and state officials had their meeting while attending the 32nd annual Environmental Permitting Summer School event, sponsored by the Florida Chamber on Marco Island.
