PAWS Pets of the Week
Matt the Cat, an 8-week-old, was rescued over Memorial Day weekend, on May 26.
All the animals have to have a name when they are vetted, and I always seem to run out of names since PAWS started on the islands in 1987. By the time I arrived at the location on Sanibel Captiva Road where the kitten was living alone in the wild, Sanibel police Officer Matt Casola already had him in a pet carrier, ready and waiting. I decided I did not have to waste time thinking of a name; if he was a male, he would be Matt the Cat, after Matt the Cop.
Unfortunately, all was not well with little Matt and the veterinary clinics were closed due to the holiday. So Sunday, we were off to Specialized Veterinary Services in Fort Myers. Matt has since also been to Dr. Diane Bean at VCA Coral Veterinary Hospital twice, and we are not completely finished.
His issues may stem from a trauma to his little body while living alone outside, or it may be the result of an upper respiratory infection. He may need to be sedated to get to the bottom of the problem, but he is just too tiny right now to risk the anesthesia. The good news is that other than the symptoms he is exhibiting, everything else about him seems fine and normal. He was one pound, 14 ounces on the day I picked him up, and he has gained a full pound since.
We are extremely hopeful that Matt the Cat will make a complete recovery and will be available for adoption in the not too distant future. He is a total sweetheart!

Mallory Ann will be 7 years old in June and is looking for a forever home.
