First loggerhead nest of season found

On April 26, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s Sea Turtle Program located the first loggerhead nest of the season on Captiva. With the program’s kickoff on April 15, approximately 100 volunteers will take turns monitoring every inch of the islands’ beaches every morning up through October looking for nests laid the night before. Each nest will be staked, numbered and recorded, as well as screened to keep predators out, then monitored until the eggs hatch.
