BIG ARTS Chorus bids farewell to season with spring concerts
BIG ARTS Community Chorus will bid farewell to the winter season with its popular Spring Concerts on April 4-5 under the direction of Ellen Whitten, who is finishing her first season as director.
The program represents an eclectic variety of choral music chosen from the chorus’ choral library, some of Whitten’s favorites and in conjunction with Randy Woods, director of the Shell Point Singers. There will be early madrigals and pieces by composers like Frans Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms. Randall Thompson’s “The Road Not Taken,” based on the poem by Robert Frost, is also on the program.
“The second half of the program includes selections from one of my favorite musicals, ‘South Pacific,'” Whitten said. “‘Nothin’ Like a Dame’ will be performed as part of a medley and feature Ed Mosel, Don Breiter, Dick Brown and Bob Brace as they sing and swing a deck mop.”
She hopes the audience will walk away with an appreciation for a job well done.
“They have worked very hard and I hope the audience is not only entertained, but enlightened by their performance,” Whitten said.
Her first season with the chorus has been a busy and rewarding one.
“It’s been great working with individual singers and molding them into a chorus,” Whitten said. “I’ve gotten much support from BIG ARTS and the chorus members. It’s been a very good season.”
The 82-member chorus will perform both concerts at 7 p.m. in Schein Hall.
