‘Sultana’ to be discussed at the Sanibel Public Library
On Thursday, July 9 at 2 p.m., the Non-Fiction Book Discussion Group will discuss Alan Huffman’s “Sultana.”
The explosion and wreck of the Mississippi riverboat Sultana in 1865, which killed 1,700 passengers, mostly Union soldiers recently released from Confederate POW camps, is but the capstone of this engrossing survey of the many varieties of suffering in the Civil War. Making skillful use of war diaries and memo9irs, the author makes the Sultana’s doomed voyage, with its hellish scene(s) of hundreds of screaming people being burned alive or drowning each other in panic come alive. Huffman fits the climactic disaster into a meticulously researched, harrowing look at the sorrow and the pity that was the Civil War.
The discussion group will gather in Meeting Room #4 of the Sanibel Public Library, located at 770 Dunlop Road. There is no charge to attend the session.
Also, readers are invited to discuss “Angelica” by Arthur Phillips, the focus of the Wednesday, July 22 book discussion meeting at the library.
“Angelica” is the story of a haunting in Victorian London affecting the mother and 4-year-old daughter, and the patriarchal man of the house. The psychological thriller includes a chilling sexual spectre that makes its way through the Barton house.
The group discussion begins promptly at 2 p.m. in library Meeting Room #4. Reference materials, which include reviews and an author biography, are located at the library. It is preferable to come having read the book to be able to join in the lively discussion, but all are welcome.
If you have questions, call the library at 472-2483.
