Next Twilight Talk to feature conservation educator
The Sanibel Historical Village will hold its next Twilight Talk at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at the Old Schoolhouse on the village grounds. The speaker will be Kristie Anders, education director at the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation.
Anders’ topic for the evening is “The Growth of Conservation Consciousness on the Islands.”
Anders has served as the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s education director since 1988. She has been teaching people about the area’s natural habitat and environmental stewardship for over 30 years. Anders has developed a unique knowledge of the greater Everglades ecosystem through her experience as a marine educator in the Florida Keys, a ranger in Everglades National Park, an outdoor recreation planner at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and her position at SCCF.
In addition, Kristie has been a park ranger in Acadia National Park, Independence National Historic Park, and Salem Maritime Historic Site. Anders is the former executive director of the “Ding” Darling Foundation. She holds dual degrees from Penn State University in Marine Sciences and Environmental Education.
Kristie resides on North Captiva Island, traveling to work daily by boat.

The April Twilight Talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9. Deborah Gleason, chair of the city’s Historical Preservation Committee, will talk about “Island Ladies of the 1950s.” Also in April, Charles LeBuff will speak at the last Twilight Talk of the season at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. His talk with cap off the museum’s Lighthouse Day, and his topic will be, “The History and Operation of the Sanibel Lighthouse.” Reserve your tickets for both or either presentation as soon as possible.
As the Historical Village celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year, much work is under way to make the village better than ever. A 30th Anniversary Campaign is in progress with a $200,000 goal. A dollar-to-dollar challenge match has begun for all gifts made from Feb. 1 up to $45,000. All are invited to participate.
The campaign will culminate in a party March 20 beginning at 6 p.m. on the village grounds. In addition to cocktails, dinner, and a live auction, music will be provided by Island Jazz. Victor Mayeron will serve as master of ceremonies. Reservations are required by March 17, and tickets are $150 per person. To make a reservation, call museum manager Emilie Alfino at 472-4648. The historical village is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. The village is located at 950 Dunlop Road (next to BIG ARTS). Admission is $10 for adults 18 and older; those under 18 and members are free. Docent-guided tours are available at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at no extra charge, based upon docent availability.
