Bird tracking expert to speak at Osprey foundation meeting
Dr. Ken Meyer, an avian researcher who has fitted birds in the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel with tracking transmitters, will be the keynote speaker at The International Osprey Foundation annual meeting on Sunday, March 23.
Dr. Meyer, a biologist at University of Florida in Gainesville, and executive director of Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI), will speak about his work tracking species including swallow-tailed kites, snail kites, short-tailed kites, magnificent frigatebirds, great white herons and reddish egrets.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at The Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
Dr. Meyer uses modern continent-spanning satellite and radio transmission techniques.
In 1997, he co-founded Gainesville-based ARCI and soon branched out to other research challenges on a broader range of species. He has served on species status-review committees for state agencies and biological review panels for National Wildlife Refuges; and as a graduate student advisor and committee member in his position as an adjunct associate professor in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida. He received a Partners in Flight Research Award for his contributions to bird conservation.
The osprey foundation annual meeting will include an update on the 2014 osprey nesting season. All are welcome to attend. A short business meeting will precede the program. A $3 donation is requested of non-members.
