Floridians asked to help give Loggerhead sea turtle a name
Florida residents currently have a chance to name an endangered sea turtle as part of the fourth annual Tour de Turtles, an online migration tracking event that follows 14 sea turtles as they travel the world’s oceans.
Tour de Turtles is a fun and educational journey through the science, research and geography of sea turtle migration using satellite telemetry. This year, MeGotta, Inc. has again teamed up with Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC) to give Florida residents a turtle to cheer for.
The “Name That Turtle” contest gives Floridians the chance to name a loggerhead sea turtle that will be outfitted with a satellite-tracking device and released from the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Melbourne Beach, Fla.
“The Tour de Turtles is one of our favorite events each year because it provides us with an opportunity to share our love of sea turtles with our home state of Florida,” said Jim Sparks, President of MeGotta, Inc. “We are always amazed at the creativity and passion that the Floridians bring to the naming of our state’s turtle.”
Residents can enter the contest by visiting www.tourdeturtle.org/namingcontest until Friday, July 8 at 5 p.m.. A panel of judges will select the winning name and announce the winner on the Tour de Turtles website on Monday, July 11.
The winner will receive four tickets to attend the Tour de Turtles Kick Off Celebration and Live Sea Turtle Release in Melbourne Beach, along with an sea turtle adoption for their named loggerhead.
