This year, island youngsters will have the opportunity to give to others as they read throughout the summer. The Summer Reading Program at the Sanibel Public Library takes a charitable turn. The theme for this year’s program is “Reading For Others!”

This year, island youngsters will have the opportunity to give to others as they read throughout the summer. Throughout the program, each participant will earn points by reading and completing small assignments. The points will accumulate and be turned in for a book that he or she chooses for themselves and for a child at the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

During the final program on Tuesday, July 29, a presentation will be made to the Children’s Hospital of all the books youngsters have selected for them. Along with having fun reading this summer, the children will feel a sense of pride in giving to another.

Kick-off for the Summer Reading Program will be held on Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. until noon. The program will run through Friday, July 29. The program offers a reading challenge, a summer reading marathon and several fun events to attend.

Each Tuesday, there will be an afternoon program at 3 p.m. These special programs are for children of all ages. And, of course, Youth Librarian Barb Dunkle will host the Ninth Annual Mini Parade Float Contest. Children can make their floats and turn them in to the library on June 28. Teen VIP After Hours will be held each Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 p.m.

“Reading For Others!” is sponsored in part with the support of the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, Inc. and its generous donors. For additional information on the Summer Reading Program or the Foundation, please call the Library at 472-2483.
