On Thursday, March 10, Sanibel author Charles Sobczak will be signing copies of his newest title, “The Living Gulf Coast — A Nature Guide to Southwest Florida,” at MacIntosh Books & Paper, located at 2407 Periwinkle Way.

The event gets under way at 6 p.m. and continues until 8 p.m. Wine and cheese will be served and the author will give a brief synopsis of the book at 6:30 p.m. This work is similar in style and a companion book to “Living Sanibel — A Nature Guide to Sanibel & Captiva Islands,” which is presently one of the best-selling books on Sanibel and is currently in the top 100 best-selling nature guides in the United States, according to Amazon.com.

“The Living Gulf Coast” differs notably from “Living Sanibel” in that half of the book is devoted to describing and locating more than 160 parks, preserves and eco-destinations found throughout Southwest Florida. The six counties included in the book are Sarasota, Charlotte, Lee, Collier, Glades and Hendry. More than 60 of these natural locales are described in great detail, allowing the reader to pick out any given day trip to visit places as diverse as Myakka River State Park, Fisheating Creek or the Fakahatchee Strand State Forest, to mention only a few.

The first half of the book echoes “Living Sanibel” in that it describes the birds (291 species), mammals (39 species) as well as the reptiles and amphibians (88 species) that are most commonly found throughout the region. These numbers include not only endemic species but invasives such as wild hogs, Muscovy ducks and Burmese pythons. The book has been endorsed by nationally renowned authors and naturalists Donald and Lillian Stokes, Dr.Meg (Canopy) Lowman and Andrew McElwaine, president and CEO of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.

The work contains more than 600 full-color photographs from regionally acclaimed photographers such as Dick Fortune and Sara Lopez, Alan Maltz, R.J. Wiley and Judd Patterson, among many others. If you would like to read an excerpt from the book go to www.indigopress.net.
