Smart to speak at season’s first San Cap Art League gathering
The Sanibel Captiva Art League’s first general meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way.
The speaker for the meeting is batik artist Pat Smart. She is a painter and printmaker who has been making prizewinning batik art for the past several years. Batik is a 2000 year old Indonesian method of creating unique and colorful images on cotton or rayon fabric by the repetitive immersion in dye baths. Wax is used as a resist to leave areas untouched in the dye process, that is to say, white or a previous color.
Smart’s striking batik work has won numerous prizes, including shows in New York and here, at San Cap Art League shows.
In addition, Pat is a former elementary school teacher who retired and took up art several years ago. She now teaches workshops in New York, where she lives during the summer. She is also the vice president of the San Cap Art League.
This is the 46th year of the Sanibel Captiva Art League. The league continues to expand in its activities and enthusiasm. Join us for refreshments, announcements of the league activities for the new season and Pat Smart’s presentation.
