Sanibel Church to ride into the wild west for Vacation Bible School
If the idea of good grub, games and watching the adventures a young boy who gets stuck in a video game sounds appealing, then you may want to check out what one local church is doing for summer Vacation Bible School.
The Sanibel Community Church is sponsoring Wild West Vacation Bible School on the week of June 20 to June 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. Children ages three to those who have completed the fifth-grade are welcome to come, said Kathy Cramer, the SCC director of children and family life.
About 100 children usually attend Vacation Bible School every year, she added.
To kick-off the week, the church is sponsoring Puppet Spectacular, presented by Virtuous Reality Puppetry and Blacklight Theater on Sunday, June 20, at 6 p.m. The entire family is invited.
The point of the free weeklong program is to teach children that there are consequences for one’s actions. A series of skits will portray a boy who plays video games and gets caught in a virtual reality. He gets stuck in a video where he winds up shooting people during the game. Eventually the boy realizes he needs help and must ask for forgiveness. The skits will be performed by former Vacation Bible School students, Cramer explained.
During the week, aside from the program, there will be square dancing, line dancing, western style food such as chili and cornbread and hootenannies.
But the event isn’t all good eats and dancing. “The heart of our message is love and forgiveness,” Cramer said. “Those are the things that we are teaching.”
Though the program is free, the church is accepting offerings for an upcoming mission to help children sharpen their reading skills in the Dominican Republic.
