The annual Cultural Fest at the Captiva Memorial Library began on Wednesday, Jan. 6 with a presentation by author and former staff director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, James Harford.

But if you missed Wednesday’s presentation, don’t worry – according to branch manager Ann Bradley, there are plenty of amazing presentations coming up throughout January, February and March.

“This is something that’s been in the planning stages since last year. This year we have artists, photographers, authors and musicians. It’s going to be a cultural treat,” Bradley said, offering gratitude to the Captiva Library Board for their support and the Captiva Civic Association for providing equipment and technical support for all of the programs.

Coming up on Jan. 13 is a free, one time public showing of the award winning independent film “Arranged,” directed by Diane Crespo and Stephen Schaefer.

The month of February will feature two island photographers – Sallie Rich on Feb. 3 and Charlie McCullough on Feb. 10, chamber music by Renata Arado and Espen Lilleslatten on Feb. 17 and a presentation by Chris Godwin, a specialist in American literature, on Feb. 24.

“Last year, Chris Godwin presented ‘Coming to America: Immigrant Stories from American Literature.’ She was very good. This year she’ll have an all new program,” Bradley said.

On March 3, Charles Sobczak will speak about his latest book “Living Sanibel: A Nature Guide to Sanibel and Captiva.”

The following week on March 10, Josephine Anderson of Albert Meadow Antiques will present “A Jeweled History.”

“That’s going to be wonderful,” Bradley said.

On March 17, Svea Scott and Louise Tuttle will inform guest about the Captiva Images Project.

“The Captiva Images Project is the joint project of Louise, Svea and the library to digitally preserve some of the photographs that we have here in the library. Svea has recreated the scrapbook that Louise had donated to the library. It’s a combination of photographs, including ones in Louise’s album and photographs from Svea’s family and the Dickey family,” Bradley said.

Coinciding with an exhibition at the Captiva Civic Association, Sanibel artist Myra Roberts will give a presentation about her work on March 24.

The final installment of Cultural Fest, March 31, will feature seasonal island resident Doug Scott, author of “Life on Misery Bay: A Small Town Murder Mystery.”

Presenters for Jan. 20 and 27 are as yet unconfirmed, but if you have questions, call the library at 472-2133.

“This is a long awaited event and it’s something that we’ve been looking forward to all year. We’d like to have people come and join us – especially people that missed out last year. Don’t miss this one – it’s all new,” Bradley said.

The Captiva Memorial Library is located at 11560 Chapin Lane.
