Kids get ‘magically creative’ at Captiva Memorial Library
The final installment of the Captiva Memorial Library’s “Be Creative @ Your Library” 2009 reading program took place last Thursday, attracting a large crowd of residents and visitors to see “Get Magically Creative @ Your Library with Brent Gregory.”
With the help of his lovely assistant Kim Gregory, the featured magician dazzled youngsters and adults alike with an array of amazing tricks featuring a library theme – the magic words for the day being “I love to read!”
“We go all over the state of Florida teaching kids how important it is to read,” Gregory said to the audience as he began the show.
Gregory is in his thirtieth year of performing magic, but he says he got his start entertaining in the library circuit 25 years ago.
“I came up with the concept of bringing a reading education program to the library. We started in Broward county about 25 years ago, and we wanted to make the show interjected with education and teach the kids a lesson, get them excited about reading in the summertime,” Gregory explained.
From simply finding the hidden bookworm to making an unsuspecting volunteer from the office float in thin air, the Gregorys gave Captiva library guests an energetic show, interspersed with enthusiastic messages about the importance of reading.
The Gregorys travel all across the state of Florida inspiring children to read through a well-organized and visually-thrilling show, accented with music and lots of audience participation.
“We go from Jacksonville, and this year, all the way down into lower Dade County,” said Gregory, who lives in Pompano Beach.
The Gregorys have even won a Nickelodeon Parent Plus award for their act.
But for Gregory, it’s not about the recognition.
“We love it, we absolutely love it. This is our fourth or fifth show in two days here in Lee County. We love it,” Gregory said.
