Captiva artist exhibits work in Naples Gallery

3 min read

Beginning on March 7, Captiva artist Stella Farwell will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Art Modern Gallery in Naples.

Farwell, who grew up in New Orleans, was formally trained in both fine and commercial art, spanning a broad spectrum of techniques and talents that contribute to her work’s unique look and style.

“I’ve been a creative person all my life,” Farwell said, noting that she’s been working as a professional artist for about 30 years.

“To some extent, I’m an experimenter in my work,” said Farwell.

The artist said that she dabbles in all forms of media, including everything from traditional watercolors to complicated plexiglass sculpture, hand-made paper and pulp pieces, acrylics, metals and stone.

“It’s changing all the time. I’m always stretching in a new direction.”

Farwell says she is inspired by the natural environment of Captiva, but finds her most persuasive muse in music.

Sometimes she likes to hang up large, long sheets on paper in her living room and listen to music -everything ranging from classical to Dixieland jazz- and just act as the artistic conduit between the music and the paper.

The shapes and ideas she comes up with during these sessions have a great influence on her work.

Her affinity for experimentation through color, materials and shapes fosters a kind of whimsical, lively movement in her pieces, though each one is as technically sophisticated and sound as it is magical.

Farwell’s upcoming show in Naples will give exhibition-goers a broad taste of her extremely varied artistic sensibilities, including traditional paintings, different uses of paper and sculpture.

“It’s a real variety and I used a lot of different materials,” Farwell said, listing pvc board, paper and plexiglass as only some of the items she has incorporated into her work.

And for an experimenter like Farwell, creating her masterpieces is just as much fun as getting to show them off to art lovers in Southwest Florida.

“It’s really been a fun show to get ready for,” she said.

The exhibition runs through March 28, but you will have a chance to meet Farwell during the exhibit’s opening reception in Saturday, March 7, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Art Modern Gallery is located at 751 12 Avenue South in Naples and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
