TV journalist Gwen Ifill to lecture at BIG ARTS

The FORUM at BIG ARTS series welcomes veteran journalist, television newscaster and author Gwen Ifill this Saturday, Jan. 31. Ifill is moderator and managing editor of “Washington Week” and senior correspondent for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.” She was the moderator for the Vice Presidential debate during the 2008 election.

Before coming to PBS, she spent five years at NBC News as chief congressional and political correspondent, and still appears as an occasional roundtable panelist on “Meet The Press.” Ifill joined NBC News from The New York Times, where she covered the White House and politics. She also covered national and local affairs for The Washington Post, Baltimore Evening Sun and Boston Herald American.

Her new book, “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama,” surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential victory.

A native of New York City and a graduate of Simmons College in Boston, Ifill has received more than a dozen honorary doctorates and is the recipient of several broadcasting excellence awards. She serves on the board of the Harvard University Institute of Politics, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Newseum, and the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

All speakers in The FORUM program are completely sold out for 2009. Any interested patrons can come the night of the lecture to see if tickets have been turned back in. Although BIG ARTS cannot guarantee ticket availability, historically tickets have become available the night of a lecture. The FORUM begins promptly at 7:30 p.m.
