‘Ding’ cartoon of the month
Masquerading and elections: This cartoon by Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling, penned in October of 1922, continues to hold relevance in October of 2024. The Pulitzer-winning editorial cartoonist produced hundreds of front-page graphic commentaries for the Des Moines Register and a slew of syndicated newspapers across the country in the early 20th century. A staunch conservationist, Darling saw to the creation of the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge in 1945, renamed for him upon his death in 1962. This month we also celebrate his 148th birthday. The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge owns the copyright of the “Ding” Darling cartoons.
