SANIBEL PUBLIC LIBRARY The Sanibel Public Library will host a virtual author talk on Aug. 15 with Irena Smith.

The Sanibel Public Library provides a variety of programming for adults and children.

With support from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, the library has launched a series of virtual author talks to include bestselling authors and thought leaders. The next one will take place on Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. with Irena Smith, PhD, author of “The Golden Ticket: A Life in College Admissions Essays.” Attending parents will hear constructive and healthy ways to approach the college application process and how to preserve their relationship with their teen and help them define success on their own terms.

Smith is an author, former Stanford admissions officer and independent college counselor. Her memoir, “The Golden Ticket,” is the winner of the Story Circle Network’s Gilda Award. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a PhD in Comparative Literature from UCLA, where she received a Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award and Dissertation Year Fellowship. She taught literature and composition at UCLA and Stanford before transitioning to college admissions, college advising and writing. Smith has given a TEDx talk on humanizing the college application process and writes about parenting, college admissions and redefining success in her weekly Substack newsletter.

A question-and-answer session with the author will follow.
