Rec center provides update on activities, events

CITY OF SANIBEL The ballfields and pavilion have reopened at the Sanibel Recreation Center.

The Sanibel Recreation Center reported on upcoming programs and activities.

A ribbon-cutting was held on May 23 for the grand reopening of the ballfields. Mayor Richard Johnson threw out the first pitch on Field 1. MudBugs Cajun Kitchen provided free food and Kona Ice was onsite. The ballfields and pavilion are open for public use outside of school hours, including evenings and weekends during the summer and holiday breaks.

Adult Pick-up Softball has resumed on Wednesdays for ages 18-49 and on Mondays for ages 50 and older from 6 to 8 p.m., weather permitting. Participation is free. Closed-toe shoes required and bring a glove.

Annual facility maintenance is taking place. From now through June 9, the center will be fully closed. Beach parking, dog license and other activities will be available for purchase at the Sanibel Planning Department, at 2475 Library Way, Sanibel; hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

From June 10-15, the gymnasium and weight room will be closed. Fitness classes will be held in the Osprey Room; no cycling class. Limited fitness equipment will be available for use in the Osprey Room. The pools and outdoor courts will be open.

A variety of memberships, passes and punch cards are available.

The center is open on Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
