‘Roosevelt’ visits Sanibel refuge
The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge reported that Joe Wiegand returned to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge with his reprisal of President Teddy Roosevelt to kick off President’s Day weekend. He spent Feb. 16 with refuge staff doing outreach and special programs in local schools and senior centers to raise conservation awareness. On Feb. 17, he appeared at The Roost for a free, open-to-the-public program. It started with a ribbon-cutting of the new Feather Jim Sprankle Cubby, made possible by an anonymous donor. Wiegand followed that with a performance focusing on the history of the Roosevelt’s connection with conservation, Sanibel and Captiva, and the refuge.
