Sanibel library offers mix of programs

SANIBEL PUBLIC LIBRARY The Sanibel Public Library will host a virtual author talk on Aug. 15 with Robert Jones Jr.

The Sanibel Public Library provides a variety of programming for adults and children.

With support from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, the library has launched a series of virtual author talks to include bestselling authors and thought leaders. The next one will take place on Aug. 15 at 4 p.m. with New York Times bestselling author Robert Jones Jr. He will discuss his award-winning novel, “The Prophets.”

Formerly known online as “Son of Baldwin,” Jones is an award-winning writer. “The Prophets” won the 2022 Publishing Triangle Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction, and it was a finalist for the 2021 National Book Award for Fiction. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Essence, Variety and The Paris Review, as well as in the anthologies “Four Hundred Souls” and “The 1619 Project.” Jones’ latest work can be found in his online newsletter, Witness.

A question-and-answer session with the author will follow.

Summer Book Bingo is a self-directed reading challenge for adults, with opportunities for prizes. Pick up your card at the library’s service desks or download it from the “News Blog” at www.sanlib.org. Turn in the card by Aug. 31.

Additionally, the library has scheduled upcoming programs.

Family Storytime for ages 5 and under will be held on Aug. 9 at 10:30 a.m. with Megan Willis. Literacy is a family bonding experience with stories read aloud, followed by early literacy centers of play to flex minds, develop motor skills and increase creativity. Programs will include an art/craft center. Parents and caregivers should plan to be engaged with their child.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
