Rec center to offer Red Cross lifeguard training course
The Sanibel Recreation Center is offering the American Red Cross Lifeguard Blended Learning training course over three days — Oct. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Blended learning combines online learning with in-person skills sessions where participants will practice skills and demonstrate competency. The course gives participants the knowledge and skillset to become professional lifeguards. Participants are required to pass the in-water perquisite test on the first day in order to continue being enrolled and must be at least 15 years old by completion of course.
The swim requirements include:
– 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both
– Two minutes of treading water with hands in armpits without stopping
– Within one minute and 40 seconds swim 20 yards, retrieve a brick at 7 feet to 10 feet deep and then swim 20 yards back to the starting point while both hands are on the brick and face is above water. Exit the pool without using ladder or stairs.
Participants must complete the online course before the first day and bring their completion print out to class. Instructions on how to access the material will be emailed one week prior to the course’s start.
To obtain certification, participants must be able to attend all online and classroom sessions, complete the pretest, complete all skill checks, and score an 80 percent or higher on the written exam.
The cost is $214 for member and $280 for non-members.
Daily, weekly, semi-annual and annual memberships are available for the center.
