Dr. Kathleen Ann Dempsey
Dr. Kathleen Ann Dempsey died on August 9, 2021, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Ann graduated from Oshkosh High School in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and received her B.A. from Lawrence University, in Classics; her M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also in Classics; and her Ph.D. from St. Louis University, in American Studies. She taught in Wisconsin public schools until she joined the faculty at St. Louis Community College in 1966, and became a loyal follower of the St. Louis Symphony. After her retirement in 1997, Ann continued to travel widely with her sister, Janet Steiger, until Janet’s death in 2004. Her favorite city was Paris, and she spent many summers in the South of France. Over the last decade, Ann became a Florida resident and spent more time at her condo on Sanibel Island, where she supported the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) and Big Arts. She loved art, classical music, and jazz, and called herself a dabbler as an artist and a pianist.
Funeral services are private.
Ann is survived by her nephew, Bill Steiger, of Washington, D.C.; a legion of Dempsey cousins across the country; and friends around the world.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to SCCF or Big Arts on Sanibel. Friends may sign the family’s on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.
