Annual motorcycle run to help support ACT services

A local motorcycle run and brunch that ends on Captiva is signing up bikers and passengers.

Organized by Abuse Counseling and Treatment, the 9th Annual David Barbur Biker’s Brunch will begin on Aug. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at Stu’s Motorcycles in Fort Myers, with registration opening at 8:30 a.m. The run will wind its way from Fort Myers and onto the islands, concluding at the Keylime Bistro.

At the island eatery, event participants will enjoy a buffet-style brunch.

“David Barbur, when he was alive, he started it,” ACT Director of Community Education and Development Megan Dalabes said of the fundraiser. “To raise awareness and support of domestic violence survivors and their kids.”

A former ACT board member, Barbur died from a brain tumor in 2013.

“Now that he’s passed away, the event continues,” she said. “His whole family comes out.”

“It’s really an incredible community-based event,” Dalabes added.

The proceeds will support safe, free and confidential programs for victims of domestic violence and their children and sexual assault and human trafficking survivors in Lee, Hendry and Glades counties.

“Because the sponsors cover everything — all of the proceeds will benefit ACT,” she said.

Dalabes highlighted some of the services that the organization provides to those needing assistance, including a 24-7 helpline, three safe shelters, children’s programs, legal support and counseling.

Like multiple fundraisers, last year’s event was cancelled because of the pandemic.

“Due to the pandemic, there has been a huge increase in the need for our services,” she said. “Unfortunately, throughout the year, there also has been less money coming in.”

In 2019, event participation maxed out and it raised $5,000 for ACT.

“So we are hoping for $5,000 again this year,” Dalabes said, adding that regardless of the proceeds, the event serves as a great opportunity to raise awareness about the organization and services it provides.

“There is a cap at 85 registrants this year,” she said.

The cost is $25 per biker or $20 per passenger.

Along with the brunch, there will be coffee and donuts provided in the morning.

“Stu’s offers to do that,” Dalabes said. “They’re wonderful.”

The spread put together by the Keylime Bistro includes its famous key lime pie.

“It’s a delicious full buffet with great offerings for a variety of different folks,” she said. “You’ve got your healthier eaters, and you’ve got your heartier eaters.”

Participants will also have a chance to win raffle prizes, including gift cards to local businesses.

The public is invited to register and take part.

“This is such a special way to get together, have fun, enjoy a good meal and support survivors of violence and abuse and their children in our community,” Dalabes said.
