Sanibel earns StormReady recertification

By CITY OF SANIBEL - | Jul 30, 2021

CITY OF SANIBEL Sanibel Police Chief Bill Dalton and Lt. Grace Towler are presented with the StormReady certificate by Jennifer Hubbard, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The city of Sanibel reported that it has met the standards for recertification as a StormReady community. The certification is valid for three years, until June of 2025.

While no community is storm proof, a certified community is better prepared to respond to weather emergencies and protect lives and property. Moreover, upon certification, communities may become eligible for a discount under the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System.

To be officially StormReady, a community must:

– Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center

– Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public

– Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally

– Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars

– Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.
