Mayor appointed to Lee County TDC
During its May 18 meeting, the Lee County Board of County Commissioners appointed Sanibel Mayor Holly Smith to the Lee County Tourist Development Council for a two-year term, expiring in 2023.
It is her second appointment to the TDC.
“I am extremely proud of this opportunity to again serve on this council. Tourism is the economic driver in Lee County and throughout Florida,” Smith, an owner-operator of hotel properties within Lee, said. “I am grateful to the Lee County Board of County Commissioners for their confidence in me.”
Established by citizen referendum in 1983, the TDC is a nine-member council appointed as an advisory council to the county commission. It oversees the tourist development tax fund, of which a portion is used to support the Beach and Shoreline Capital Improvement Program. The TDC also provides direction on programs, budgets and reviews expenditures of the Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau quarterly. Each year it approves funding for the maintenance of county beaches, renourishment projects, and beach and shoreline capital projects such as piers, boardwalks, parks and revegetation.
Smith became a member of the Sanibel City Council in 2017. Prior to joining it, she served as a member of the Sanibel Planning Commission for nine years, serving as vice chair in 2016 and 2017. Smith currently serves as liaison to the planning commission, on a rotation as liaison to the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce’s Intergovernmental Affairs Committee and on the board of directors as treasurer for the Southwest Florida League of Cities. She previously served as liaison to the Contractor Review Board, Sanibel Bicycle Club, Community Housing and Resources, and Coast and Island Community Land Trust.
In addition to her TDC appointment, Smith is the liaison and vice chair of the Lee County Horizon Council and serves on the Lee County Coalition of Mayors. She is the voting delegate for the Florida League of Cities, member at large for the FLC Legislative Committee, is serving her fourth term on the FLC Municipal Administration Legislative Policy Committee and is a member of the FLC Mayors Round Table. Smith has been appointed to the FLC Federal Action Strike Team, Florida Municipal Loan Council and the FLC Advocacy Committee.
Smith is a member of the United States Conference of Mayors and serves as the National League of Cities voting delegate for Sanibel. She was recently appointed to the board of directors for the Florida League of Mayors.
This year, Smith was awarded the Florida League of Cities Home Rule Hero Award for her fourth consecutive year.
