Center 4 Life should be reopened

By Staff | Apr 27, 2021

To the editor:

We are writing to express our concern for the senior citizens and members of Island Seniors Inc. We have been without the services of the Center 4 Life now for over one year and we are being informed by the city, which operated the center on Library Road, that the center is not likely to resume these services for possibly another year or even longer.

The city has purchased a building also on Library Way, which formerly housed the Sanibel Captiva Community Bank, for a future Center 4 Life, though discussion has suggested that the city might temporarily house the Sanibel Police Department while renovations are being made at City Hall. Our concern is that the Center 4 Life’s current home should be reopened and a director be hired with necessary staff to once more serve our senior population. While seniors can do some activities at The Community House and the Sanibel Recreation Center, neither of these facilities can serve the many purposes the Center 4 Life does.

Many of our seniors live alone with no nearby family. The center is primarily a social center, providing activities and programs that help seniors to maintain a healthy social life and wellbeing. The seniors were able to work out, take classes like computer skills, art, bridge, crafts, health, driving skills, kayaking excursions, tours, theater, book club, concerts, overnight and day trips, craft fairs, a Trash and Treasure Sale, volunteer opportunities, potluck dinners, etc. Sometimes a senior’s needs can be as simple as a place to drop in and meet people, have a coffee, etc. Many of our members need these activities and fellowship which cannot be provided without a home. As concerns about the pandemic ease and more seniors receive their vaccinations, we hope that the city will consider opening the Center 4 Life as a priority.
